The Westin Grand Hotel Berlin - Umweltschutz in Berlin

Make a Green Choice – Earn a reward while protecting the environment

The Westin Grand Hotel Berlin has been participating in "Make a Green Choice", a program by Starwood Hotels & Resorts, launched in mid-February 2013. The "Make a Green Choice" program offers guests staying for two nights or more the possibility to opt out of morning housekeeping services. This not only benefits the environment, but also entitles them to a choice of three different gifts:

  • 500 SPG points or
  • EUR 5,00 voucher for our Relish Restaurants & Bar or
  • A donation to Unicef for children in need

Book your stay in The Westin Grand Hotel Berlin and participate in the "Make a Green Choice" program. Even if you are only staying for two nights, you can still make a decisive contribution to environmental protection in Berlin. If you would like to participate, please indicate this at check-in or by displaying the door hanger provided in your room.

The Westin Grand Hotel Berlin - Linden-Gourmet Honig aus eigener Produktion

The Westin Grand Hotel Berlin - Beekeeper Marc-Wilhelm Kohfink and the hotel manager Rainer-Bangert

The Westin Grand Hotel Berlin supports city beekeeping in Berlin

Our four bee colonies first took up residence on the roof of our hotel in early May 2011. The location offered the hard-working little insects ideal prospects. They look down over the Reichstag and their new terrain starts right at the front door: the lime trees on the famous boulevard "Unter den Linden" and the flora of the Tiergarten situated nearby.

Some 120 kg of honey will be harvested over the next months. The organic gourmet lime-tree honey will be available at our breakfast buffet in future and can be purchased at reception for EUR 5.00.

The bees were provided by the Berlin beekeeper Marc-Wilhelm Kohfink, a pioneer in city beekeeping. Mr. Kohfink advises our Hotel Director, Rainer Bangert, in his new duties as a city beekeeper, providing ongoing support and assistance.

Rainer Bangert became aware of the problem of colony collapse in the agricultural sector in 2010 and hatched a plan to support city beekeeping. Pesticides are not used in the city. What's more, unlike agricultural areas, where monocultures prevail, the city offers biological diversity so that bees can gather nectar from a wide range of different plant species – in other words, our new "employees" can enjoy optimum conditions for gathering nectar.
